  • Staff Professional Development Fund – A college fund has been established to support staff professional development. The funds may be used for training courses, conference fees, development-related travel, etc. A department may request up to $1,000 per request. Requests will be accepted until March 15.   • Sustainable Pedagogy Grant – UK faculty with an interest in sustainability are invited to apply for admission to the Sustainable Pedagogies Workshop, supported by the UK Sustainability Challenge Grant. With a goal of interdisciplinary collaboration, the workshop will go beyond merely teaching about sustainability by focusing on ways faculty can implement sustainable methods of teaching into their curricula. A maximum of 12 grants of $2,000 each will be awarded. Click here for more information.
  • Recruiting for Exercise Study – Researchers invite you to participate in a 12-week exercise program to better understand how exercise could be used most effectively to promote weight control. Participants will be compensated $150 for their time. Click here for more information.

       · Are between the ages of 18-40 years
       · Do not use tobacco products
       · Do not have injuries or disabilities that prevent you from exercising
       · Are not pregnant
       · Are healthy enough to exercise
       · Do not currently exercise

  • Feb. 19 – Promotion and Tenure Workshop, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Gorham Hall, E.S. Good Barn. All faculty members applying for promotion in 2018 should attend this workshop, organized by the CAFE Faculty Council.  For more information, email Megan Lucy.
  • Feb. 19 – Great Backyard Bird Count, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Join The Arboretum and the Central Kentucky Audubon Society for the Great Backyard Bird Count, a citizen science project of Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology. Enjoy a short introduction to basic bird identification and some free bird-watching apps (please download Merlin and eBird in advance). Next, hike around The Arboretum to count and record birds you see, which will help scientists track migratory patterns. Suggested donation: $3 per person or $5 per family, cash or check only.   • Feb. 21 – Food@Lunch Series, 12-1 p.m., The Food Connection Learning Kitchen. UK’s Jim Ziliak will present Food Insecurity and Food Assistance in the U.S. Ziliak is a, the Gatton endowed chair in microeconomics, executive director of the Kentucky Federal Statistical Research Data Center, and director of the Center for Poverty Research.   • Feb. 26 – Leaders of LexGig, 5:30-7 p.m., 307 Woodward Hall. Aldona Valicenti, chief information officer at LFUCG and Scott Shapiro, chief innovation officer for Mayor Jim Gray will speak about the city's high-speed broadband initiative. They will take an in-depth look at the mayor's strategic goals, how the gigabit network project fits within the vision, and how information technology is driving efficiencies in city government and enhancing interactions with citizens.   • Feb. 27 – Intercultural Awareness Day – 2-4 p.m., E.S. Good Barn.  All UK faculty and staff are welcome. The focus of this year's event will be religion and spirituality. The program will include a campus religious resource fair and panel discussions. Food and refreshments will be served. For more information, click here.
  • March 7 – Little Sprouts at The Arboretum, 10-10:45 a.m. or 11-11:45 a.m., The Arboretum visitor center. Explore the joy and wonder of nature with us each Wednesday in March. Each session has a special theme that begins with a story and hands-on exploration. You will rotate through crafts, science experiments and planting stations. Then, get outside and explore nature on a short hike (weather permitting; make sure to dress warmly). Recommended for ages 3 to 5.  Cost: $3 per child per session, Cash or check only.  Preregistration is required. Click here for more information.
  • March 15 – Opening Day at Kentucky Children’s Garden, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., The Kentucky Children’s Garden at The Arboretum. For details, click here.
  • April 14 – 2018 Boot, Scoot & Boogie 5K, The Club at Spindletop Hall, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., 3414 Iron Works Pike, Lexington, 40511. The UK Agricultural Education Society is hosting its third annual 5K race. All monies will go toward the goal of a $100,000 endowed scholarship fund for agricultural education students.
