Mosquito/Tick Identification Workshop

Mosquito/Tick Identification Workshop

Year: 2023
Project Leader: Caitlin Stamper, Stephen Dobson, Reddy Palli
Department/Program: Entomology
Funding: $870

The Barnhart Fund for Excellence will provide funds to run a full-day Mosquito/Tick workshop for extention agents, public health workers, pest control organizations and other interested parties.

The course would take a half day for a ‘hands on’ demonstration of trapping/sampling for ticks and mosquitoes along with techniques for specimen preservation. The remainder of the day would be for teaching proper identification techniques, which woud entail learning microscope techniques and work with mosquito taxonomic keys. We would also provide information on contacts and resources available for pathogen testing.

Our target is 30 attendees initially, and with positive feedback and additional demand we would investigate make this a recurring, self-supporting workshop. The requested funding is for the intial workshop.
